Dillard University Documentary Screening & Party
We hosted a screening and party for Opportunity, Access & Uplift: The Evolving Legacy of HBCUs at the Dillard University campus in New Orleans.
After hosting a sold-old premiere party for Opportunity, Access & Uplift: The Evolving Legacy of HBCUs in Chicago, we wanted to bring the experience to current HBCU students. Brandis Friedman’s alma mater Dillard University, which featured in the documentary, was the natural first stop.
Dillard’s entire freshman class came out for the screening, discussion and party, which included a live DJ set by the legendary Raj Smoove, food from NOLA Chuck Wagon, and a pop-up HBCU exhibit curated by Danielle Scruggs.
We partnered with Dillard students at every step. Dillard junior Victoria Byrd helped with event coordination and social. Dillard student and Courtbouillon editor-in-chief Zuri Primos hosted the post-screening discussion, and junior Jordan Winder captured the scene.
Discussion
Dillard journalist Zuri Primos led a conversation with filmmaker Brandis Griffith Friedman and Dillard students Emmanuel Taveras, Naysa Sutherlin and Kiela King about turning an HBCU education into a meaningful and creative career.
